Hyperlite Mountain Gear Mid 1 Tent Review - ''The Mid 1 isn’t just a regurgitation of the single skin pyramid design of other brands in Dyneema but a thoughtful redesign of the classic shelter.''
Posted by Mark Richardson on Sep 10, 2025
Frankly, I chose this tent because of its low weight and because having used single skin shelters of this type in the past, I know they provide significantly more space for a given weight. I don’t mind a bit of condensation, which is a fact of life when single skin camping.
I soon realised however that the Mid 1 isn’t just a regurgitation of the single skin pyramid design of other bra

Primus Micron III Piezo Stove Review - ''The time to boil water seemed extremely fast which I put down to the design of the burner head.''
Posted by Mark Richardson on Sep 10, 2025
I’ve had an up and down relationship with this stove – here’s how it went. I bought the version with the Piezo Igniter, thinking that it was integrated with the stove in some way – not unreasonable given other stoves in this category. However, I was disappointed to find it's actually a separate item altogether. As I always take a Firesteel as backup, I left the igniter at

Leki Skysolo FX.One Carbon Trekking Poles Review - ''The bit that impressed me most was the lever mechanism used to release the poles for folding up.''
Posted by Mark Richardson on Sep 10, 2025
Leki are still the market leaders in trekking poles, there are lighter alternatives but there always seem to be compromises, which Leki doesn’t do. So, the SkySolo FX.One Carbon are definitely in the ultralight class just not the lightest, but what you get is a superb pair of poles with no compromises that I could find compared to much heavier brethren.
The bit that impressed me most was th

Hoka Challenger ATR 7 GTX Review - ''They feel solid yet forgiving out of the box.''
Posted by Mark Richardson on Sep 10, 2025
I chose Hokas for my Chamonix to Zermatt trek because of their comfort, and I wasn’t disappointed, they feel solid yet forgiving out of the box.
On reflection though these were the wrong choice for this trek, high altitude trekking is tough on shoes and the Hoka Challenger ATR 7 GTX weren’t up to the task. They immediately showed signs of wear and throughout the trek suffered from bei

Sunslice Fusion Flex 6 Portable Solar Power Panel Review - ''I was impressed by this little gadget and it’s probably the best one I’ve used.''
Posted by Mark Richardson on Sep 10, 2025
I decided to try a solar power option because I expected it to be sunny quite a lot of the time. That sounds obvious, but I know from experience that to get the best out of a solar panel, you need full sun directly onto it. Attaching it to the back of a rucksack can be its nemesis.
I was also conscious I’d be hiking West to East. This is not ideal since most of the walking should be done by

Chamonix to Zermatt — 12thto 22nd July 2025

Day 1
The official Day 1 route is a hike along the Chamonix valley to the end before climbing out (below a cable car) to the Col de Balme followed by a descent into Trient where there’s a place to camp.
My idea was to use the Balcony du Sud path instead which contours along the Chamonix valley on the opposite side to Mont Blanc, about mid-way up the mountain side. It’s a superb path w

Chamonix to Zermatt — 12thto 22nd July 2025 — Getting There & Back

Getting There
Easyjet flies direct to Geneva from Manchester so this was the preferred option, don’t be tempted to go via Schipol, it’s a nightmare. Geneva is the gateway airport for Chamonix so there are loads of options for transfers. I got caught out though, I booked a bus for an hour after the flight was due to land so this is what happened:
Flight delayed out of Manchester, but

Chamonix to Zermatt — 12thto 22nd July 2025 — Trip Introduction
Posted by Mark Richardson on Sep 01, 2025
Chamonix to Zermatt is known as the Walker’s Haute Route and is an amazing journey of around 180km across some of the most beautiful passes in Switzerland. I completed the route in 2006 but wanted to experience it again in 2025, nineteen years since my first crossing and at the advanced age of 64.
The traditional way to make the crossing is to use mountain huts and valley hotels, but for me

Chamonix to Zermatt — 12thto 22nd July 2025 — Trip Total Cost

Cost
The cost of the trip depends very much on whether you camp every night or use accommodation, and how much you use campsites and restaurants for meals.
The cost of cable cars is also significant, though of course you don’t have to use any of these, though I think the one from Le Chable to Les Ruinettes is well worth it. As it saves a full day, you can offset the cost of the cable car ag

Ultralight for 10 Days in the Alps: Chamonix to Zermatt Haute Route Gear List
Posted by Mark Richardson on Jul 30, 2025
I was intending to complete Chamonix to Zermatt high route using a mix of wild camps and camp sites. As I’m getting on a bit, I needed a backpack that was as light as possible without sacrificing comfort, as I would be using my tent for ten nights straight. I’m a big fan of single skin trekking pole tents, you tend to get more internal volume for a given weight and I don’t m

Top 10 Ways to go Ultralight when Backpacking
Posted by Mark Richardson on May 08, 2025
In order to make the right decision about what gear to take on a trip, it's imperative that you weigh everything and record it. That not only lets you know which of your two bits of similar gear are the lightest, but it also enables you to track your total pack weight as you swap in and out different pieces of gear. If you know your way around a spreadsheet — even better, because adding up a
