Ultrasphere 1.5 Sleeping Mat
The Rab Ultrasphere 1.5 Sleeping Mat is built with weight and packability firmly in mind, weighing in at 316g, it's best suited to summer trips, reflected by its 1.4 R-value. The tapered shape keeps bulk to a minimum, and at 8cm thick, it feels stable and comfortable, making it good for both back and side sleepers. The included pump sack is efficient and straightforward to use, weighing 68g, and makes setup quick while avoiding moisture build-up inside the mat. The mat looks impressively small in the supplied stuff sack. Though getting it back into the bag can be frustrating, especially when packing away quickly in the confines of a small tent, it makes more sense to use a simple stuff sack or an elasticated band instead.
Ultrasphere 5
The Rab Ultrasphere 5 Sleeping Mat balances low weight with solid thermal performance, weighing 345g and offering an R-value of around 5. It sits comfortably in the high-efficiency 3, pushing into the 4-season category. The tapered shape keeps pack size down while still offering a supportive platform in camp. At 8cm thick, it feels stable, with a structure that holds you in place well through the night. It is not the most spacious design, but it suits side sleepers. The included pump sack is efficient and straightforward to use, weighing 68g, and makes setup quick while avoiding moisture build-up inside the mat.
Ultrasphere 4.5 Sleeping Mat
When both warmth and low weight are crucial, the award-winning Ultrasphere 4.5 is the ultimate packable, featherlight air mat. Its ground-breaking design includes two layers of heat-reflective TILT, which reduce radiant heat loss, and offset air chambers that trap heat within the construction, allowing you to recharge comfortably without the need for high-volume insulation. Combined with a soft, exceptionally lightweight fabric, the mat’s weight-saving construction makes it ideal for bikepacking, thru-hiking, and multi-day mountain running.
Ionosphere 5
The Rab Ionosphere 5 Sleeping Mat - Regular offers a well-balanced combination of warmth and comfort, weighing 513g and featuring an R-value of 4.8. It sits comfortably in the 3-season category, with enough insulation to handle colder nights. At 8cm thick, it feels very supportive and comfortable. The long vertical baffles are well suited for side sleeping, while the oversized outer baffles help cradle you and keep you centred on the mat through the night. The tapered shape helps reduce weight and pack size, which suits those looking to cut grams, though it is less accommodating for those who move around more in their sleep.
Ionosphere 5.5
Engineered with precision to deliver exceptional warmth in a compact size, this insulated air mat is ideal for alpinists and adventurers exploring in winter conditions. With a heat-reflective TILT lining and air-trapping Stratus™ R insulation, it reduces heat loss through both radiation and convection, offering you a comfortable sleep on frozen bivi ledges and clear nights at altitude. Low on weight, high on comfort, it thrives on long-distance ski tours, winter fastpacking trips, and multi-day ascents.
Hypersphere Ultra 7.5
Rab's Hypersphere 7.5 Sleeping Mat is a standout choice for fast-moving adventures in harsh, cold environments. It delivers exceptional insulation for winter alpine climbs and arctic expeditions without adding unnecessary bulk.
With a generous 8cm thickness, it offers excellent cushioning, while oversized outer chambers help keep you centred through the night—minimising the risk of rolling off uneven ground. The 800-fill power goose down traps heat efficiently, reducing convection currents and maximising warmth. Inflation is quick and effortless thanks to Rab’s included pump sack, making setup a breeze after a long day on the move.
Exosphere 3.5 Sleeping Mat
If you’re looking for comfort, durability and ease of use, our self-inflating Exosphere 3.5 sleep mat is ideal. Its X-Core™ foam filling is supportive and insulating, ensuring you get a rejuvenating night ready for tomorrow’s adventures. This foam uses X-core technology, which is a 3-dimensional weight relieved structure. This saves weight and reduces pack size, but also traps air to boost warmth and contributes towards the mat's R-value of 3.6, while the rectangular shape supports a range of sleeping positions. The low-profile two-way valve allows for rapid inflation when the weather is threatening, and easy deflation when you’re ready to roll the mat away into its stuff sack.
Stratosphere 4
The mat works well for side sleepers; it’s 8cm and keeps you well off the ground and very well cushioned. Two oversized baffles help keep you on the mat, which is especially good for those of us who toss and turn in our sleep.
The mat is rectangular, which I prefer over mats that taper at the feet; I always find that my legs have slipped off during the night on narrower mats, especially if I'm using a quilt. A rectangular mat will add some weight, but I'll happily carry a few more grams for a good night’s sleep. It’s a nice quiet mat, so you won’t disturb your camp mates tossing and turning during the night.
Stratosphere 5.5
The Rab Stratosphere 5.5 is a premium insulated sleeping pad designed for camping and backpacking in cooler conditions. Utilising high-loft recycled Stratus R insulation, it provides an impressive R-value of 5.5 for reliable warmth from frozen ground.
Despite the high warmth rating, the 5.5 is impressive for such a well-insulated full-length mat. The 8cm thickness offers plush comfort and protection from lumpy surfaces, and it works well for side sleepers.
While the Stratosphere may not be the lightest mat on the market, it compensates with its durable construction and competitive price. Striking the balance between weight and durability is a common challenge in gear selection. It's refreshing to have a well-built option that prioritises robustness as an option.
Hypersphere 9.5
The Rab Hypersphere 9.5 Sleeping Mat is a robust and exceptionally warm option for those venturing into extremely cold, expedition environments. It offers an industry-leading R-value of 9.5—the highest currently available—ensuring unparalleled insulation against freezing ground temperatures.
The mat’s 10 cm thickness provides excellent comfort, while oversized outer chambers cradle you in place, preventing unwanted midnight slides. The durable 75D recycled polyester fabric holds up well in rugged terrain, making it a reliable choice for demanding expeditions.
While the Hypersphere 9.5 is slightly heavier than some alternatives, no other mat matches its insulation performance. This is the mat to beat if warmth, comfort, and durability are your top priorities in extreme conditions.
