UOG TOP PICK— A lighter, more versatile version of the Staika, the Allak is still a robust and durable four-season dome tent. With the stable three-pole design, this freestanding tent can easily withstand the wind, rain and snow, giving you great shelter from whatever the weather throws. An industry classic and one of our Top Picks.

Hilleberg says:

Inspired by our exceptionally strong Staika, the Allak was designed to be a completely free standing, all season dome tent for those prioritizing lighter weight over absolute strength. During its two year development, the Allak became our testers’ tent of choice anytime they were uncertain about what kind of terrain or conditions they might experience on a trip.

Its exceptionally compact footprint and free standing design are ideal for tough pitching conditions, such as rocky ground and sand, and it is easily light enough for mobile journeys, where you move your camp every day. At the same time, its three pole dome structure is strong enough for base camp use in all but the worst conditions. Since its introduction, paddlers favor it for its ability to be pitched nearly anywhere, while backpackers choose it for its roomy stability and wonderfully light weight. Mountaineers appreciate both the Allak’s free standing design and its roominess, as well as its ability to deal with snow loading. And taller adventurers find its length a welcome comfort.

Our Verdict

Hilleberg's Allak 2 Tent balances strength and weight to give you a fantastic two person, four season tent. The three pole design used on the Staika and Soulo is used here on the Allak to give a freestanding tent that stands up brilliantly to strong winds, torrential rain and heavy snow while still being light enough to carry on summer backpacking trips. Admittedly, it is not the lightest tent but it doesn't take long to see that this tent is highly durable and a great place to be in the worst weather.

The tent pitches quickly and easily once you've got the hang of it. The three poles give instant strength, even without using the guy lines being pegged. The inner is already attached which makes things so much quicker and easier to set up and pack away. One area of concern is condensation. It has never bothered me as I know many tents will suffer in certain conditions but since the fly goes all the way to the ground, getting enough air flowing through the vents can be an issue.

The details in the design, materials used and quality of construction result in a fantastic tent. Hilleberg focus their designs on quality, durable tents that provide shelter from the worst conditions. They use a label system to differentiate their tents and intended uses. The Allak falls into the Red Label category which are: ideal for trips in any season where lighter weight is the priority and are quite capable of standing up to challenging terrain and conditions.

Features

  • Kerlon 1200 outer tent fabric and 9mm poles make for a very lightweight yet supremely stable tent.
  • All season construction: outer tent walls extend to the ground and mesh areas are backed with adjustable fabric panels.
  • Dome construction with multiple pole crossing points provide outstanding snow-load handling capability.
  • Plenty of room for two occupants and their gear.
  • Linked but separable inner and outer tent for simultaneous pitching.
  • Fully free standing dome design requires no pegs for pitching, and the straightforward short sleeve and clip pole system make for quick, easy set up.
  • Dual entrances and vestibules ensure that one door can always be situated out of the wind and provide flexible entry/exit and storage options.
  • An optional footprint covers the entire area of the outer tent, including the vestibules. It connects directly to the tent, and can be left attached during pitching.
  • The inner tent can be replaced with a Mesh Inner tent (sold separately).
  • The outer and inner tents can be used separately. Pitching the inner tent alone requires optional pole holders (sold separately).
