Our Verdict
I think the TX5 Evo Mid GTX successfully blends the precision of an approach shoe with the reassurance of a lightweight hiking boot. The secure lacing system and supportive ankle cuff help the boot feel planted on rocky terrain, while the Vibram Megagrip outsole provides confidence on slabs, scree and rough mountain paths. I particularly like that the updated design includes a resole-ready platform, which gives the boot a longer useful lifespan once the outsole eventually wears down.
The fit remains fairly precise and technical, so it may not suit broader feet. It is also more focused on rocky and mountainous terrain than on muddy lowland trails. I think it works best for mountain walkers, scramblers and lightweight backpackers who want stability, durability and precise foot placement without moving to a heavy traditional boot.
