Our Verdict
At just 5.1 inches long, the SOLO filter easily fits into any backpack or pocket. Its versatility shines with standard 28mm threading, allowing it to attach to most water bottles. The one-handed flip cap design enables quick and effortless filtration, filling a 1-litre bottle in only 20-30 depending on how recently you flushed the filter.
The filter's effectiveness is impressive. It removes 99.999999% of bacteria, 99.999999% of parasites, and 99.999999% of microplastics, silt, sand, and cloudiness. The 0.2-micron pore size meets US EPA and NSF P231 drinking water standards.
Durability and sustainability are key features, with the filter constructed from 50% post-consumer recycled, BPA-free plastic. It includes leak-proof top and bottom caps for clean storage and a custom threaded backwash syringe for maintenance. The leak-proof top and bottom are a welcome addition, as this stops the filter from getting the rest of your gear wet, which is especially useful if you need to keep the filter warm in cold conditions.
A backwash syringe is an effective tool for cleaning the device, but you may need to bring it on extended backpacking trips. LifeStraw, however, recommends flushing the filter every time you use it or at least at the end of every day, which seems overkill.
