With a 5200 mAh lithium-ion rechargeable battery, the Orbiter 650 can charge small electronics off either of its USB-C or USB-A charge ports. The lantern can either be suspended from a collapsible double-hook loop on top or set up on a table using folding legs. With its rugged construction and IPX4 Stormproof rating, the Orbiter 650 is built to work through any camp adventure and whether you want a cozy campfire glow, a down-beam to illuminate a stovetop, or just want to transition to “party mode” with multiple colors, the Orbiter 650 is easy to adjust.
Our Verdict
The Black Diamond Orbiter 650 is best viewed as a camp hub rather than a simple light source. The 650-lumen output provides enough illumination for larger campsites, while the diffused light creates a far more pleasant atmosphere than the harsh beam of a headtorch. I particularly like the combination of folding legs and hanging hooks, which makes it easy to position wherever light is needed.
The integrated 5200mAh battery adds useful flexibility, allowing the lantern to double as a power bank for electronics. The range of lighting modes is broader than most campers will need, but the adjustable brightness and warm campfire setting are genuinely useful additions.
At 513g, it is clearly aimed at campsite and basecamp use rather than backpacking. For family camping, van life and group camps, it is a thoughtfully designed lantern with a strong feature set.
