Our Verdict
The Patagonia Light & Variable Jacket feels more like a practical everyday windbreaker than a stripped-back mountain shell. At 212g (Medium), it is not chasing the lowest possible weight, but it offers a regular fit, hand pockets, and a zipped chest pocket that doubles as a stuff pocket.
The 100% recycled polyester ripstop fabric gives useful wind protection, with a PFAS-free DWR finish for light showers and damp starts. The fit is roomier than a close-cut technical windproof, so it layers easily over a fleece.
The elastic-bound hood keeps things simple; there is no adjustment,t but it holds well in moderate winds.
