Two-person practicality in a compact trekking-pole tent
Terra Nova says:
A lightweight, two-person trekking pole tent designed for efficient three-season camping. Our Verdict
The Terra Nova iO 2 Tent is a two-person trekking-pole shelter with a practical double-wall layout. At 1307g for the fly, inner, and poles, it is not the lightest option, but the two doors, twin porches, and flysheet-first pitch give it a more usable feel for shared three-season backpacking.
I like the shared-use layout. Two doors and twin porches make access and gear storage easier, while the flysheet-first pitch is useful when setting up in wet weather. The 3000mm flysheet and 5000mm groundsheet suit UK use
I’m a big fan of trekking pole tents, and one of the main draws is obviously not having to carry poles. With the iO 2, though, you still need to bring two short poles, one at the head end and one at the foot end. They do serve a purpose, creating more usable space and supporting one of my favourite features: the ability to open both ends to increase airflow. Even so, having extra poles to carry detracts from the simplicity that usually appeals to me about this style of shelter.
The other limitation is the inner width. At 125cm, it should work well with two regular mats, but two wide pads will be too tight, which is disappointing for a two-person tent.
For pairs who want a compact, weather-ready shelter with much better breathability than many stripped-back trekking-pole tents, it is a well-considered option.
