Ether Light XR Pro Insulated ASC
Building on the strengths of its predecessors, the Sea to Summit Ether Light XR Pro Insulated ASC Sleeping Mat delivers a notable upgrade in design and functionality for cold-weather camping. A key improvement is its impressive R-value of 7.4, up from 6.2, ensuring reliable warmth in sub-zero temperatures—ideal for winter expeditions.
The introduction of Thermal Core technology enhances insulation efficiency by reflecting infrared energy back to the sleeper, maximising warmth without adding unnecessary bulk. Additionally, the mat’s construction now features double the weld strength of previous models, significantly boosting durability for extended use in harsh conditions.

The latest iteration of the Sea to Summit Ether Light XR Insulated ASC Sleeping Mat brings a series of refinements that improve warmth and packability. The most significant change is the shift from down insulation to the new Thermal Core insulation, which uses multiple layers to reflect body heat while reducing air movement inside the mat, increasing thermal efficiency.
With an R-value of 4.1, this mat is capable of year-round use, providing enough insulation for cold conditions while remaining light enough for milder weather. While true winter expeditions may require additional insulation, it’s well-suited for three-season adventures and moderate winter camping.

Pursuit Self Inflating Mat
This is impressively light for a self-inflating mat. This mat employs Horizontal Delta Coring to remove 40% of the foam, creating supportive air-filled channels that enhance comfort while reducing weight and packed volume. The Contour shape provides additional width at the shoulders, offering more room for side sleepers without the added weight of a full rectangular mat.
The XPEL Valve System simplifies inflation and deflation. Its flip-over design prevents air from re-entering during deflation, making packing more straightforward. While the mat is lightweight, it doesn't compress as tightly as some ultralight airbeds, but it's impressive just how small this self-inflating mat compresses.
Comfort Light Insulated
The Comfort Light Insulated Sleeping Mat uses Air Sprung Cell technology and a hybrid matrix of offset cells to provide amazing stability and comfort. A double layer of cells in the torso increases warmth, while a single layer of cells in the head and legs reduces weight.
Thermolite® and Exkin Platinum® are used to optimize heat retention and the multi-function valve enables simple inflation, deflation and the ability to fine-tune your personal comfort level. What's more, the uprated 30D/40D face fabric is quiet and durable, while the lamination technology continues Sea to Summit’s class-leading reliability.
3 Season Plus Backpacking Mat with Excellent Comfort.
On the heavier side for Ultralight Backpackers but a good comfort and warm option for most.
Pursuit Plus Self Inflating Mat
It’s remarkably comfortable for a mat in this category, thanks to its 7.5cm thickness and supportive foam core. The Horizontal Delta Coring trims down unnecessary bulk while maintaining a cushioned feel, which I found particularly welcome when camping on uneven ground. The mat feels noticeably warmer than thinner options, with an R-value of 4.2 providing reassuring insulation for trips into the figures.
I appreciated the straightforward XPEL Valve System—inflating was hassle-free, and deflating was simple. It packed down smaller than I’d expect for a self-inflating mat this thick, though it still takes up a bit more space than an ultralight airbed. That’s the trade-off for not needing to blow it up manually.
Comfort Deluxe Self Inflating Mat - Camper Van
At 2532g, it’s clearly not built for hiking packs, but it's a standout for van setups or base camps. The 10cm thickness makes uneven surfaces disappear beneath you, and with an R-value of 6.5, I found it reliably warm even in chilly conditions. The stretch-knit top fabric adds a soft, home-like feel that I appreciated when sleeping directly on it without a sheet or liner.
The updated valve design makes inflating and deflating refreshingly straightforward—I didn’t have to fight with trapped air to get it rolled away. The packed size is still sizeable, so I’d want to factor in storage space if using it in a smaller van or tent, but for static use, it’s a trade-off I’d happily make for the comfort gain.
