Outdoor Research Helium Gaiters Review - Trek Scotland

Posted by Trek Scotland on Apr 19, 2022

“Meet the Helium Gaiters, our best-selling and award-winning Helium fabric recreated into a gaiter design to keep out pesky rocks, dirt, rain, snow, and any other debris you kick up on the move.”

Outdoor Research have really kept the weight down for the Helium gaiters which come in at a mere 144 grams in a size large, with a pack size comparable to a lighter weight pair of gloves, whilst still offering full lower leg protection.

Pertex Shield Diamond Fuse 2.5L nylon is distributed in differing weights with a very thin 30D ripstop upper leg panel, and a much more robust 420D Packcloth with PU Coating around the foot and ankle. To keep the weight down it’s very noticeable where each weight of fabric is distributed, with a clear divide between increased protection and breathability.

It must be noted that for use with crampons we would recommend a heavier weight option as a slight nick from a crampon spike or a brush against the adze of your axe and the Helium fabric will come to quick end. We found they are a much better option for on the move activities when frequent travel through wet or boggy ground is unavoidable.

The fitting options are what we like with a hook and loop front closure, elasticated heel to form a tight hold across differing footwear. The drawcord cinch at top hem keeps in place without the need to overtighten, and we thought the retro style buckle adjustment of the Hypalon instep strap is a far better option over Velcro which makes for a longer lasting product. Outdoor Research do note that the instep straps are also easily replaceable with attachment loops which lends itself well to simple repairs for longer distance routes.

Breathability is good, and we never had any major issues with clamminess when worn over or underneath legwear. The thin upper fabric was almost unnoticeable against the skin and was much more comfortable to wear than most other gaiters of this length we had used previously.

Our Verdict
The Helium gaiters from Outdoor Research offer a great amount of protection for such a small weight and pack size. The lightweight fabric is certainly more aimed at general walking rather than a more robust winter gaiter with the use of crampons. The fit is solid, and they do a great job at keeping out dirt and moisture from entering the lower legs and footwear, whilst still being comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Breathability was good, which was expected from the use of the Helium fabric. As a general gaiter for ultralight travel, they are perfect for covering long distances with intermittent use over mixed terrain.
