Exped's Updated 2026 Range

Exped has built its reputation around lightweight, dependable kit for sleeping and carrying in the mountains, and these latest updates sit right in that space.
Exped’s Lightning rucksack has long been a favourite with backpackers who want a lighter pack without losing proper load control. The updated 2026 range keeps that ultralight heritage but adds a more supportive carry system, improved storage, and a choice of 40, 50, and 60-litre sizes.

Alongside the new Lightning packs, Exped’s Ultra 6.5R mats show just how far lightweight sleeping kits have come. With a 6.9 R-value and weights starting from just 357g, they offer serious cold-weather insulation without the bulk or weight usually associated with winter-capable mats. Together, these updates are aimed at walkers, backpackers and wild campers who want dependable kit that keeps pack weight under control.

Ultra 6.5R Sleeping Mats

Engineered for adventurers who demand warmth, comfort and reliability without unnecessary weight. Every detail has been designed to provide a more stable, warmer, and quieter night's sleep in the backcountry.

6.9 R-Value

Testing at a measured R-value of 6.9, Ultra 6.5R provides reliable all-season warmth.

Did you know? ISO-rated sleeping bags are tested with 7R mats. Exped recommends using a sleeping mat with an R-value of at least 6.5 or higher to ensure your sleeping bag provides the warmth it's rated for.

Weights

Ultra 6.5R M Mummy weighs 357g, Ultra 6.5R MW weighs: 530g, Ultra 6.5R LW weighs: 592g and Ultra 6.5R Duo LW weighs: 1116g

The Exped Ultra 6.5R M Mummy Sleeping Mat delivers impressive warmth for its low weight of just 357g (Mummy). Despite the name, it carries a 6.9 R-value, placing it firmly in winter-capable territory without pushing it into heavier categories.

The vertical full-length baffles give it a stable feel on uneven ground and work particularly well for side sleepers. It is not the thickest mat available at 9cm, but it feels supportive and comfortable through the night. The slightly raised outer baffles help keep you centred, which is noticeable on the narrower mummy shape.

That tapered shape is the main trade-off. It reduces weight and pack size but limits space around the feet. For many hikers, this is a worthwhile compromise when keeping overall pack weight down. The Schnozzel pump sack is quick and efficient to use and weighs 54g, making it easy to justify carrying.

Overall, this is a well-judged option for cold conditions, offering strong warmth, low weight, and a stable sleeping platform.

SynmatPlus Technology™

Zero Crinkle. No Noise. Just Quiet, Restorative Sleep.

At the core of Ultra 6.5R is SynmatPlus Technology™, EXPED's most advanced insulation system, pairing recycled Texpedloft microfibre with heat-reflective layers.

The result: Reliable all-season warmth without added weight.

Vertical baffles
Vertical baffles maximize sleep surface and durability vs. horizontal baffles.

Soft, recycled material
Recycled 20 D ripstop polyester is soft to the touch. It's also bluesign® approved.

7cm in mat thickness
Provides pressure-relieving support.

2026 Exped Lightning Rucksacks

The updated Lightning feels like a considered step forward rather than a redesign. At 1224g (60L S/M), it is slightly heavier than the previous 1180g version, but the added features justify the increase.

I am a fan of the move to offer this pack across three sizes, with 60, 50 and 40 litre options, as it makes it easier to choose the right volume without compromising on features.

Weights

Lightning 40 weighs: 1143g (S/M), Lightning 50 Weighs: 1187g (S/M) and Lightning 60 Weighs: 1224g (S/M)

What's Been Updated?

The most notable change is the T-Rex carrying system. This uses a central aluminium stay with reduced contact points across the back, improving airflow while still transferring load effectively to the hips. It feels closer to a traditional carry system, with larger hip-belt fins and more substantial shoulder straps, but without sacrificing the low-weight appeal.

The adjustable back length remains a strong point, allowing a more precise fit across different body shapes. The updated design also adds useful storage. The large front mesh-and-fabric pocket provides quick access to waterproofs, and the top pocket is practical for items like snacks or a small first-aid kit. Hip belt, zip pockets, and improved side storage are also welcome.

Compression remains a highlight. The zig-zag system is still one of the more effective setups for stabilising loads and managing volume. It works well with the roll-top closure and handles bulkier items well.

On the trail, the pack carries best in the mid-weight range. It is capable of more, but comfort starts to drop off as loads increase. The updated materials and reinforced base improve long-term durability.

Overall, this is a meaningful update to a well-established pack, maintaining its minimalist approach while improving usability and carrying capacity.
