With its ultra-lightweight construction and adjustable back system, the Lightning was developed for trekking tours where low weight and high carrying comfort are crucial.
The innovative T-Rex carrying system with reduced contact points ensures effective ventilation and freedom of movement. The back length can be precisely adjusted, while the efficient load transfer to the hip belt ensures a stable and comfortable fit even with a heavier pack weight.
Sophisticated pack volume management allows flexible adjustments. The zig-zag compression straps are easy to adjust and, together with the roll-top fastener, allow variable volume control. They also secure larger equipment such as a sleeping mat or flysheet. Generous mesh outer pockets, zipped pockets on the hip belt and modular attachment points support clear organisation.
Made from ultra-light ripstop nylon with a reinforced polyester base, the Lightning combines minimal weight, durable performance and well thought-out design.
Our Verdict
The Lightning 50 brings the updated design of the 60L into a more compact volume, and it feels like a natural fit for longer days and lighter multi-day trips.
I am a fan of the move to offer this pack across three sizes, with 60, 50 and 40 litre options, as it makes it easier to choose the right volume without compromising on features.
The standout feature is the T-Rex carrying system. Built around a central aluminium stay with reduced contact along the back, it improves airflow while still efficiently transferring load to the hips. Larger hip-belt fins and more supportive shoulder straps give it a more structured feel than many ultralight packs, without sacrificing its low-weight focus.
The adjustable back length allows for a precise fit, which is important for getting the most from the carry system. Once set correctly, it sits securely and remains stable as the load shifts through the day. The overall feel is closer to a traditional pack, but with less bulk and better ventilation.
Storage has been improved; the large front mesh and fabric pocket are useful for waterproofs, and the addition of a top pocket makes it easier to keep essentials, such as a first aid kit, readily accessible. Hip belt, zip pockets and generous side pockets round things out without complicating the layout.
Compression remains a strong point. The zig-zag system works well with the roll-top closure, making it easy to adjust volume and keep the load tight, whether the pack is full or partially filled.
On the trail, it carries comfortably in the mid-weight range, with good stability and control. The updated materials and reinforced base inspire confidence, making it a well-rounded option for those who want a lighter pack without sacrificing structure.
