A refined ultralight pack with improved carry and smarter storage for longer trips
Exped says:
With its ultra-lightweight construction and adjustable back system, the Lightning was developed for trekking tours where low weight and high carrying comfort are crucial. With its 60 litres, it offers enough space for extra-long tours.
The innovative T-Rex carrying system with reduced contact points ensures effective ventilation and great freedom of movement. The back length can be precisely adjusted, while the efficient load transfer to the hip belt ensures a stable and comfortable fit even with a heavier pack weight.
Sophisticated pack volume management allows flexible adjustments. The zig-zag compression straps are easy to adjust and, together with the roll-top fastener, allow variable volume control. They also secure larger equipment such as a sleeping mat or flysheet. Generous mesh outer pockets, zipped pockets on the hip belt and modular attachment points support clear organisation.
Made from ultra-light ripstop nylon with a reinforced polyester base, the Lightning combines minimal weight, durable performance and well thought-out design.
Our Verdict
The updated Lightning 60 feels like a considered step forward rather than a redesign. At 1224g (S/M), it is slightly heavier than the previous 1180g version, but the added features justify the increase.
I am a fan of the move to offer this pack across three sizes, with 60, 50 and 40 litre options, as it makes it easier to choose the right volume without compromising on features.
The most notable change is the T-Rex carrying system. This uses a central aluminium stay with reduced contact points across the back, improving airflow while still transferring load effectively to the hips. It feels closer to a traditional carry system, with larger hip-belt fins and more substantial shoulder straps, but without sacrificing the low-weight appeal.
The adjustable back length remains a strong point, allowing a more precise fit across different body shapes. The updated design also adds useful storage. The large front mesh-and-fabric pocket provides quick access to waterproofs, and the top pocket is practical for items like snacks or a small first-aid kit. Hip belt, zip pockets, and improved side storage are also welcome.
Compression remains a highlight. The zig-zag system is still one of the more effective setups for stabilising loads and managing volume. It works well with the roll-top closure and handles bulkier items well.
On the trail, the pack carries best in the mid-weight range. It is capable of more, but comfort starts to drop off as loads increase. The updated materials and reinforced base improve long-term durability.
Overall, this is a meaningful update to a well-established pack, maintaining its minimalist approach while improving usability and carrying capacity.
