Range of use
- Scottish Winter Mountaineering: Whether you’re bagging a Munro or two or having a walk up a snow capped Kinder Scout, this section of the terrain guide covers all activities that involve walking in snowy mountains to help you choose the best crampons and axe to maximise your performance.
- Classic & Technical Alpinism: Involves a huge variety of different, conditions, angles and styles of climbing and because of this the choice of tools available in the Grivel collection is massive. You might need a very light axe for security on approaches to summer rock routes or you could need a pair of work horse tools for that dream north face route in winter whatever your requirements you will find the right tool for the job in this section.
Our Verdict
The Grivel Air Tech Evo weighs 492g in the 53cm length and combines a hot-forged steel head with a curved G-Bone aluminium shaft and rubber lower grip.
I like the balance here. The head has enough weight to make the adze effective for cutting steps and shifting snow, while the traditional pick shape works well for self-arrest and firm snow placements.
The gentle curve in the shaft gives a little more clearance on steeper ground without making it awkward to plunge, and the rubber grip gives you much more confidence when swinging or daggering with gloves on.
It is a fairly substantial axe, but the Type 2 certification and solid forged construction make that weight easier to justify. For me, its strength is how naturally it moves from winter walking into more technical mountaineering terrain.
