The Thermocore XPD is our thickest, warmest trekking mat offering 4-season performance and designed for users seeking the ultimate comfort in any condition. The unique vertical walled design produces a larger sleeping area than a traditional mat construction whilst also maximising the heat retaining properties. By using our aluminium Thermal Reverb technology, combined with layers of strategically placed film helps reflect heat back towards your body to keep you warm. The 20D top and bottom fabric are made from recycled nylon with a TPU lamination that is lighter, more compressible, and more environmentally friendly than traditional PVC constructions. This results in a smaller pack size without compromising on comfort. Our Silent Sleep technology also ensures a peaceful night’s sleep by eliminating rustling or crinkling noise when moving. The air-filled welded channel construction moulds to the contours of your body whilst the Airlock Valve allows for totally custom firmness than keeps you off the ground and snoozing all night.
Our Verdict
The Vango Thermocore XPD provides solid warmth with a 10cm depth and an R-value of 5.6, making it a suitable option for winter and shoulder-season trips. Welded vertical walls increase usable space, and the stretch sidewalls add noticeable comfort. At 755g, it strikes a balance between insulation and manageable pack weight. The fabric remains quiet even during movement, and its loft retention remains strong over time. The integrated pump-sack works, but it doesn't hold enough air to make it worthwhile.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
