A simple but strong solo tent that provides loads of space and comfort. The usual top quality materials and design features you'd expect from Hilleberg in a compact design that is freestanding and easy to pitch. If you're looking for a spacious and versatile one man tent that will cope all year round the Unna is a great option.

Hilleberg says

Our simplest solo tent, the fully free standing Unna is supremely easy to pitch nearly anywhere – rocky shores, narrow ridge lines, dense forests (or, of course, even on “perfect” tent sites) – and it boasts an impressive amount of interior space. It is ideal for journeys in any season where low weight is a high priority, and where the terrain makes for tricky pitching conditions.

Rather than a vestibule, the Unna has a spacious interior that easily accommodates the occupant and gear – or, in a pinch, two people. And by disconnecting a corner of the inner tent, one can create a virtual vestibule and keep the inner tent dry while entering or exiting in rainy conditions. Its dome design handles snow loading well, and its roominess and light weight lend themselves very well to mobile journeys, where you pitch your tent each day. Little wonder then that it has become a favorite of paddle tourers, year ‘round backpackers, mountaineers, cycle tourers and casual campers alike.

Our Verdict

Hilleberg's Unna Tent is a great, freestanding solo tent capable of working throughout the year. The simple cross pole design keeps weight down while the simple, rectangular floor shape provides maximum space from in a freestanding design. This tent will divide people as the lack of a vestibule will put some off while others will love the massive internal space and be happy with the storage options. After using the tent in a range of conditions it has the pro's and con's you'd expect so it really is a personal choice.

The simple two pole setup results in a quick and easy to pitch, genuinely freestanding tent and the lack of a permanent vestibule really does mean that no pegs are needed. The inner space is huge for solo trips, with other two man versions giving just 10 cm extra width, so you can store all your kit inside with ease. The benefit of the Unna design is that you can unhook one corner of the inner and pull it back to give yourself some vestibule space for wet or dirty gear to stay out of the inner. You get the right amount of pegs for every point and so you can easily make this tent stable in pretty poor conditions.

The details in the design, materials used and quality of construction result in a fantastic tent. Hilleberg focus their designs on quality, durable tents that provide shelter from the worst conditions. They use a label system to differentiate their tents and intended uses. The Unna falls into the Red Label category which are: ideal for trips in any season where lighter weight is the priority and are quite capable of standing up to challenging terrain and conditions. In reality that means it's capable of providing comfortable shelter all year round.

Features

  • Kerlon 1200 outer tent fabric and 9mm poles make for a very lightweight yet supremely stable tent.
  • All season construction: outer tent walls extend to the ground and mesh areas are backed with adjustable fabric panels.
  • Dome construction with two poles provides remarkable strength and generous head room while keeping the weight low.
  • Plenty of room for one occupant and his or her gear.
  • Linked but seperable inner and outer tent for simultaneous pitching.
  • Fully free standing dome design requires no pegs for pitching, and the simple full sleeve and tensioner pole system make for quick, easy set up.
  • The single entrance affords easy access and a spacious interior. If desired, a corner of the inner can be disconnected to create a “virtual” vestibule.
  • An optional footprint covers the entire area of the outer tent. It connects directly to the tent, and can be left attached during pitching.
