Leki's Silent Spike pads reduce the 'chink chink' of trekking poles on hard surfaces, they don't eliminate it!
Leki says:
The five mini points on this trekking version of the Spike Pad will grip on loose or slippery surfaces, just like the standard Carbide Flex Tip that comes on all LEKI trekking poles, but because the spikes are embedded in rubber they provide a softer feel as well as being much quieter (though on hard surfaces they are not totally "Silent")
Simply pushes on to the point of any of the Carbide Flextips.
Our Verdict
Leki's Silent Spike Pads reduce the noise experienced when using trekking poles on mixed surfaces - so they perform best on loose ground where they reduce the sound considerably. On hard rocky terrain there's still the ubiquitous 'chink chink' but not to the same degree as poles without these pads.
They are a press fit so they can be used with other makes of trekking pole providing they use a similar sized tip - most do, but some of the lighter weight trekking poles use thinner tips and so these would just fall off.
Leki quality ensures these tips have metal ring inserts which prolong the life of rubber tips by stopping the carbide tips from pressing the end.
