Tarps

Tents are great, but with a tarp you feel closer to nature, you can stargaze without having to open the tent up. It's suprising just how protective a tarp can be if pitched well, my advice is get one much bigger than you think you need, that way you'll have plenty of space even when you need to pitch it to ground level.
