Fleece-like warmth in a very light base layer

Our Verdict
The Switch Base Zip T uses exposed Octayarn (Octa) next to the skin, giving it more loft and warmth than I would normally expect from a 136g (Medium) base layer. I think of it as an ultralight fleece crossed with a base layer: warm for its weight, extremely breathable, and much quicker drying than a conventional fleece.
That open structure does mean very little wind protection, so it works best with another layer over the top when conditions are exposed. The 20D shoulder overlays are a smart addition, adding some protection beneath pack straps without covering the whole garment and reducing breathability.
I see this mainly as a winter base layer, but I have also used similar Octa fabrics as a very light fleece in warmer conditions. The deep front zip gives you plenty of extra ventilation, which makes that crossover use even more practical.
