Our Verdict
Closed cell foam is a fantastically light material, it cushions, is waterproof and provides a high level of insulation from the ground. Sleeping mats made from it are easily the lightest thing to sleep on, so if weight is the key consideration then these are the mats for you.
The other extremely flexible property of closed cell foam is that it can be cut to any size or shape easily with a knife or large pair of scissors. This means that if you really want a mummy shaped mat then it can be trimmed to size and shape and the extra grams discarded.
The eyelets and strap are a simple but great idea from Multimat, the mats are easy to tie off in a roll and you never lose the straps.
The alternatives, such as self-inflating mats, are heavier but may be warmer or offer more comfort for that extra weight.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
