A highly comfortable foam-filled mat designed for vehicle use and base camp setups

MegaMat Auto is specially designed for vehicles. Its shape with cut-outs on the sides makes it the perfect mat for sleeping in the car.
Like the other mats in the MegaMat product line, the MegaMat Auto features a 10 cm of open-cell foam. This not only provides the best sleeping comfort, but also ideal insulation from below. The 3D construction ensures the biggest possible sleeping surface. The soft stretch polyester surface creates a cradling comfort.
The MegaMat Auto has two separate flat valves for quick inflation and deflation. The mat is self-inflating. With the included mini-pump, the desired firmness can be achieved. A nifty Sidewinder Bag makes for quick and easy packing.
Our Verdict
The Exped MegaMat Auto Sleeping Mat is built with comfort and insulation as priorities, weighing 3728g and featuring an R-value of 8.1. This is firmly a base camp or car camping option rather than something you would carry any distance.
At 10cm thick, it feels very supportive, with the foam construction providing consistent cushioning across the full surface. The wide, shaped design is intended to fit inside vehicles, though it is worth checking compatibility, as it will not suit every setup.
Warmth is a clear strength. The foam insulation removes cold spots and provides reliable protection from the ground, even in colder conditions. The overall feel is stable and settled, with very little movement during the night.
The Top-Up Pump works, but it takes time to fully inflate the mat. A stuff sack-style pump would have been more efficient, and in practice, an electric pump is the best option.
The packed size is large, and the weight is significant, but that is expected given the focus on comfort; this isn't intended for lugging up a hill.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
