This reliable, well-insulated winter boot has thoughtful details that make it ideal for intense trails and casual outings. It keeps your feet warm, dry and supported.

Hoka One One says:

A brand-new hiker that easily transitions from scenic summit to corner café, the Kaha 2 Frost GORE-TEX is winter wonderland-ready. We added 400g of insulation and reflective foil to the original Kaha 2 bottom unit to keep feet toasty warm—and top-hook lacing makes for easy on-off. Engineered with a compression collar to seal out the elements, a Vibram® Megagrip outsole, and waterproof GORE-TEX membrane, this boot’s made for action.

Our Verdict

Hoka’s Kaha 2 Frost GTX packs impressive warmth, stability, and cushioning into a winter-ready package for hikers tackling rugged, frosty terrain. The 400g of insulation, waterproof GORE-TEX membrane, and aluminium foil insole layer all contribute to keeping feet warm. The boot has a cold-weather rating of -32°C, which I do not plan to put to the test.

Hoka’s plush dual-density midsole offers ample cushioning and support over long distances, striking a delicate balance between flexibility and stability. Those familiar with Hoka’s trail shoes will find this pair exceptionally comfortable over rough ground, thanks to the 5mm Vibram Megagrip lugs, which deliver impressive grip even on slippery, uneven surfaces.

Although the extra insulation and EVA cushioning add some weight (around 553g per boot for a UK size 8), they don’t feel overly bulky. The glove-friendly heel pull tab and top-hook lacing system offer easy entry and exit. In contrast, the heel cap provides a reassuring layer of support without compromising flexibility.
