Free standing tents are great for camping at higher altitudes where you may not be able to get your pegs into the ground because you're camping on rocks, they tend to be more wind resistant because the whole of the tent is supported by the frame, and they are also good because you can pick them up and move them until you find the flattest spot to pitch them on.
