Combining the thickness of an air pad with the plush durability of a foam pad, Flyer offers reliable comfort on the trail and now has a more cushioned feel without sacrificing packability. Designed with a groundbreaking manufacturing approach that removes nearly 60% of the foam, the pad self-inflates to increase thickness and provide ridged baffling for faster recovery after a hard day on the mountain. This year’s design update, however, introduces an air baffle around the perimeter, too. By removing foam from around the edge, we could then increase the thickness of the “bridge” in between each baffle with no weight penalty. The result is a more comfortable Flyer at the same size and weight as before!
Our Verdict
The Flyer SI Regular Mummy Sleeping Mat weighs 597g, featuring an R-value of 4.5. It is surprisingly light for a self-inflating mat, making it a strong option for those who want added comfort without a big jump in weight.
At 5cm thick, it feels supportive, with a structure that reduces movement compared to air-only mats. The design holds you in place well through the night, which works particularly well for side sleepers. The updated construction improves cushioning across the mat without increasing weight, giving it a more consistent feel on uneven ground.
Warmth is well judged for three-season use, handling cooler nights without issue. The self-inflating design does most of the work, requiring only a small amount of air to fine-tune firmness. The valve system is simple and reliable, though packing away takes a bit more effort than a standard air mat.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
