Although it originated as a race layer for mountain runners, the Deploy 3L Shell is ideal for multi-pitches deep in the backcountry, mile-long ridge traverses, and other alpine objectives where every ounce counts. The 10D face fabric is super light yet water and wind-resistant, and its minimalist design keeps it streamlined with elastic cuffs and an internal mesh pocket for storage. Stuff the Deploy in your pack anytime you’re heading out, and know you’ve got a protective layer if you need it.
Our Verdict
The Deploy 3L Shell Jacket stands out for feeling far more substantial than most lightweight waterproofs in this weight category. At 245g (Medium), the 3-layer fabric has a softer, quieter feel than many stripped-back running shells, while still packing down small enough to disappear into a pack.
I particularly like the hood. The single rear adjustment works surprisingly well, keeping the fit secure without affecting visibility when turning your head. The internal mesh pocket with cinch cord is also a thoughtful touch for quick storage.
I would have liked to see a hem drawcord for sealing out wind, even if it added a few extra grams. Still, for fast hiking and lightweight backpacking, it feels refined and easy to wear.

Material & Construction
- BD.DRY 3L - Waterproof. Breathability. Durability. Stretch. BD.dry™ 3L face fabrics are treated with a DWR solution without intentionally added PFAS and these fabrics have a hydrophilic membrane that allows water vapor to transfer through, making them waterproof, yet breathable. Applied to the backside of this fabric is a third layer, jersey backer, that feels comfortable next to the skin and allows moisture to turn to vapor before passing through the hydrophilic membrane.
