Lightweight waterproof protection built with 3-layer Pertex Shield
Rab says:
Waterproof boonie hat built with 3-layer Pertex® Shield, ideal for hiking and exploring all day in changeable weather. With a short stiffened brim that stays steadfast in windy conditions, it provides 360° protection from the elements.
Our Verdict
At just 48g (Small/Medium), the Rab Boonie Shield Hat provides decent waterproof protection around the head and face, which, as a glasses wearer, I appreciate. The three-layer Pertex Shield fabric has a 20,000mm hydrostatic head, while the short reinforced brim keeps rain away from the face and holds its shape well.
The removable chin cord helps keep it secure on exposed ground, and it can be taken off when it is not needed. As with most waterproof hats, it will feel warmer than a standard cap during harder efforts, but the full brim offers considerably more coverage. A nice alternative to the full coverage of a hood, warmer than a traditional bucket hat, but less intrusive than a hood, which I find to be a good trade-off.
