Montane Malli Long Sleeve Zip T-Shirt and Leggings Review - ''They have exceeded my expectation and eliminated concerns about new merino products.''

Merino is a natural material I am very keen on wearing as it is warm, yet regulates temperature, moves moisture well during exercise and doesn’t smell! The downside with merino has always been finding a product that is not itchy against the skin and that will not pull into holes after a short period of time.

I have been wearing Montane’s Malli Long Sleeve Zip T-shirt and Leggings for the last 6 months, and they have exceeded my expectation and eliminated concerns about new merino products.

As Montane core spin the merino around a nylon core, they can keep the fabric very lightweight, smooth and extremely comfortable to the touch.

The top is made up of a front and back panel and wide side panels which are cut to create shape. The raglan sleeve extends to the collar and has printed logo on the right upper arm. It is quite close-fitting but has a good amount of stretch, so ideal for activities where freedom of movement is paramount. Seams are joined with a ‘merrow’ stitch — a flat join with a satin style finish which sits nicely against the skin. The zip tucks neatly under a fabric fold at the collar when fully closed, adding to the comfort. Hems on the lower edge of the T-shirt and cuffs are small with a double stitch which does not restrict the stretch of the fabric.
The leggings are constructed with 4 panels and the same stitching. The waist has a 4cm elasticated band which provides enough stretch without being restrictive. A triangular gusset at the crotch eliminates 4 seams coming together and adding unnecessary bulk. The logo on the front left thigh is a nice highlight on an otherwise stealth product.

I used these as my night-time sleep wear on this year’s TGO Challenge hike across Scotland and on a recent bike-packing trip to northern France. The lightweight fabric packs small making it highly transportable for trips where carrying capacity is restricted. They also make great day wear too, as a standalone item or as part of a layering system. I am looking forward to wearing the leggings as winter draws closer, as I feel they will add insulation without bulk.

I expect the core spin weave will extend the durability of these and after 6 months of regular use and laundering when required, they are not currently showing any signs of wear, bobbling, holes or distress.
