Gossamer Gear’s updated Mariposa. What's changed?

Posted by Andy Neil on Apr 12, 2024

In the dynamic realm of outdoor gear, Gossamer Gear consistently stands out for its commitment to innovation and performance. Their flagship 60l backpack, the Mariposa, is a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence. This backpack is exceptional; we have reviewed it twice, it's that good. It was an absolute pleasure to use on my first TGO challenge in 2022.

The latest iteration of their Mariposa 60 backpack exemplifies Gossamer Gear's “Take less, do more” ethos. It boasts a host of updates aimed at elevating durability, comfort, and versatility for backpackers of all stripes.

Central to the Mariposa 60's evolution is integrating tougher, more water-resistant, durable materials. Crafted from recycled fabrics, including 100D + 210D Recycled Robic Nylon, this backpack is built to withstand the most challenging trails, offering increased resistance to cuts and tears while minimising environmental impact. The pack's seat and lower pockets have been reinforced with an incredibly tough 210D Nylon.

Gossamer Gear has also removed the internal hydration pocket from the Mariposa 60, aligning it more closely with the brand's overarching philosophy of lightweight, minimalist backpacking. This adjustment sheds unnecessary weight and enhances the pack's overall cohesion and functionality.

A cornerstone of the Mariposa 60's enhanced design is its focus on comfort and ergonomics. Introducing a new S-curve harness and improved load lifters ensures a more natural and balanced fit, distributing weight evenly across the wearer's body and reducing strain during extended treks

The most notable upgrade includes Gossamer Gear's PVT (pivot) Frame + hip belt system. This innovative system sees the pack's aluminium frame placed in a pocket on the hip belt's back centre, ensuring a snug fit and ample support while effectively transferring weight and promoting flexibility. This combination of a lightweight aluminium frame and redesigned hip belt enhances stability and support and allows for greater freedom of movement, enabling backpackers to navigate challenging terrain easily.

Customisation is essential, and the Mariposa 60 delivers with its range of customisable fit options. The new PVT hip-belt system offers a straight hip belt, more in line with a man's body shape, and a curved belt that better hugs a woman's body shape. These more tailored hip belts ensure a personalised and comfortable fit for every adventurer, regardless of body type or preference. The small-sized Mariposa comes with the curved hip belt as standard, and the medium- and large-size Mariposa comes with the straight hip belt.

The PVT Frame + Belt system is also found in the updated Gorilla 50 backpack.

Overall, the enhanced Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 backpack represents a significant leap forward in backpack design. With its durable construction, ergonomic features, and customisable fit options, the Mariposa 60 is again the go-to choice for backpackers seeking reliable performance and comfort on any adventure. Whether tackling rugged terrain or embarking on multi-day treks, this backpack is ready to accompany outdoor enthusiasts on their next journey into the great outdoors.
