Exped Skyline 45L Review - ''Very supportive, and the distribution of weight felt natural, which is key when travelling over mixed terrain for many kilometres.''

The Exped Skyline backpack is a rugged backpack that leans more towards comfort and durability over being truly lightweight. Coming in at 1534 grams this is certainly on the heavier side, although it is obvious where those extra grams have been distributed.
The outer fabric is made using 450D polyester, which has a 1500mm water column, making it practically waterproof except for maybe around the zippers. A waterproof cover is also included for extra protection and is a feature we feel makes this a great option for Scotland’s notorious wet weather. Too many times we find brands not including a cover, so having a double layer of protection on the Skyline is a great feature for us. A recent trip to Fisherfield included multiple days in very wet weather, a proper deluge at times, and having dry kit is very welcoming at camp!
Pocket space throughout follows what we could call ‘standard’ for modern packs. A large main compartment, which is long and narrow, outside stretch pockets on the side, front, and one on the shoulder straps. There are also two storage compartments located on the waist belt. This made for ample storage for multiple days of camping, including food. The Skyline keeps its shape well and feels solid even when fully loaded. If we could have one criticism, it would be that the zippered internal mesh pocket is not needed and can be removed to save a few extra grams.
A unique feature is that the large removable lid can also double up as a belt bag for holding those necessary items when base camping and wanting a light set-up for an evening summit push. Although we did try this feature, we much prefer to keep the pack as is and again, cut off the extra webbing to save weight.
We used this pack for many days in the hills and never once did it feel strained and likely to break. The Skyline is strong and well-built, with solid stitching to see much use over rugged terrain.
The side zipper made for easy access to items, although the roll top lid felt a bit overkill with a roll top and wee locking carabiner. But, we can put this all aside for just how comfortable the Skyline is to use.
With previous use of another of Exped’s backpacks, we found the shoulder straps could dig into our shoulders. Not the Skyline, this thing is so nice to wear. Shoulders, waist, and back system have just the right amount of padding. Very supportive, and the distribution of weight felt natural, which is key when travelling over mixed terrain for many kilometres. The Air Flow back system may not be the most breathable, but it fit our body shape perfectly and we never had any sore spots.
Our Verdict
As a guide, we often must pack on the heavier side as we’re responsible for extra safety items. This heavier loading can show signs of weakness in many backpacks. The Skyline 45 may be slightly heavier for its volume compared to most, but where those extra grams have been used makes for a comfortable, robust, and protective pack, perfect for multi-day wild camping along Scotland’s rugged landscape. One thing we will always notice is when a pack is digging into our shoulders making walking laborious, carrying a few extra grams is often quite marginal and unnoticeable when your focus is on the task in hand and not the wrong choice in kit. The Skyline 45 is not without fault, and you can easily save on weight by cutting down the unnecessary amount of strapping and unneeded pockets. Overall, we were impressed and plan to use the Skyline for many of our upcoming treks!
