Altra Lone Peak 9+ Review - ''I recently took them on a quick ascent of Ben Lomond via the Ptarmigan ridge and they offered great comfort and support throughout whilst being very light on the feet.''

The new Altra Lone Peak 9+ trail shoes have been my first zero drop shoes. This means the height difference between the toe and the heel is zero – they offer a flat more natural position for your feet to be in. I was a bit apprehensive about using these as they can add strain to the Achilles especially if there has been a previous injury which is what I have had on and off over the last year. However, I have now worn them for a number of months as both a day-to-day shoe and on the trail and I can say they haven’t irritated my old injury and have perhaps helped strengthen my heel. This is one of the benefits that zero drop shoes can have, as it encourages the heel to stretch more as you walk.

The other benefit that Altra pride themselves on is the large toe box. Having narrow feet, I was also worried this might cause issues, however the snug heel keeps your foot secure while the toe box allows your feet to spread without causing any rubbing or blisters. I can report no blisters in the time I have used the shoes, which was a great surprise with a new brand I had not tried before. I would note that I used Superfeet insoles in the Lone Peak 9+ and they fit perfectly, however I did size down half a size with the shoe because of the wide toe box.

The shoe itself has a tough Vibram Megagrip outsole which offers superb grip on both muddy and dry terrain. The no-sew upper has a ripstop mesh that is both strong and light whilst offering plenty of breathability whilst on longer hikes. They have the attachments at the front and rear to fit an Altra Gaiter which would be a great accompaniment on loose terrain or scree.

I have used the shoe as both a hiker and a runner, but I would say it was more of a hiking shoe as it doesn’t have the cushioning levels a dedicated trail running shoe has. However, it still performed admirably. I recently took them on a quick ascent of Ben Lomond via the Ptarmigan ridge and they offered great comfort and support throughout whilst being very light on the feet. Overall, I would recommend the Lone Peak 9+ as a great hiking shoe, perfect for long distance walks on mixed terrain as well as a light weight mountain shoe.
