About Suunto

Feb 19, 2019

Designed by Finland. Made by us.

We stand for adventure. Pioneering exploration has been in our DNA since 1936, when Finnish orienteer Tuomas Vohlonen set out to create a more accurate compass, and subsequently invented a new method for manufacturing liquid‐filled compasses. Today Suunto is at the forefront of design and innovation for sports watches, dive computers and instruments used by adventurers all over the globe.

We are proud that Suunto products can take a beating, but are also designed with an everyday aesthetic that reflects our Nordic identity. Suunto’s headquarters and factory are still in Finland.

Navigation

Suunto was founded over 80 years ago by Tuomas Vohlonen, a Finnish adventurer. In 1936, unsatisfied with current technology, knee deep in snow, and in the all-day Arctic darkness, he invented a liquid-filled compass with a steadier, more accurate needle. He was a revolutionary. And he was never lost.

Reliability

Way back in 1939, a Finnish soldier was shot by a Russian sniper during the Winter War. He lived to tell the tale. The bullet hit the Suunto M-311 field compass in his pocket.

We don’t believe in luck, we believe that for over 80 years we have created products that will never let you down.

Precision

Sometimes the decisions you make must be made quickly and under pressure. The Suunto Vector’s simplified functionalities and iconic design have made climbing at altitude safer since 1998, and it has probably seen more of the Himalayas than any other watch.

Quality

We are proud to say we are from Finland. There are many reasons for that, but one that stands out: Just like our Founder Tuomas Vohlonen – we Finns set our own standards, and the best is never enough.

Durability

Finland tests us, like we test our products. As much as we love it, our cold, dark country demands a lot from us. And because we demand a lot from our products, we take them into the real world for testing. If they can survive Finland, they can survive anything.

 Suunto Sustainability

From thriving oceans, wild rivers and up to glaciated peaks, we all – from the smallest to largest species – depend on the web of life. Suunto and our community of divers and outdoor lovers understand there’s no adventure without it. Protecting our playground is our shared responsibility.

We know we are not perfect, but we are committed to be better.

''Our vision is to be the trusted guide in the world of outdoor sports and adventure – for you and generations to come.''

Walking the Talk

We make long-lasting and repairable products to minimize waste and the environmental impact. We use 100% renewable energy at our factory and HQ in Finland, which has resulted in minimal emissions in our own operations since 2021.

To understand the climate impact of our products, we calculate the lifetime carbon footprint of new watches through life cycle assessments. We also offset these emissions identified.

We work towards minimising our impact through better materials in products and packaging, efficient production processes and encourage our community to contribute through more sustainable everyday choices.

Real Fact, Real Action

Decreasing Emissions

Our emissions have been gradually decreasing over the past 10 years. We calculate our carbon footprint according to the international Greenhouse Gas Protocol, covering all relevant emissions of Scopes 1-3. Most of our emissions are created in the value chain, and we are in the process of drafting a carbon reduction roadmap with targets in 2024. This will enable us to commit to Science Based Targets and the 1.5 degrees reduction target in line with the Paris Agreement.

Life Cycle Assessment

Based on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), one Suunto Ocean watch/dive computer creates 11.63 kg CO₂e emissions during its whole lifespan, from cradle to grave. This includes all materials and energy used in the production of the watch and its packaging, and other emission sources like logistics, use, and disposal. The LCA was conducted according to GHG Protocol’s Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting standard and verified by a third party, in line with relevant ISO standards.

Carbon Offsetting of Products

We emissions of each Suunto Race S, Ocean, Race, Vertical, 9 Peak and 9 Peak Pro watch with Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) via Tree Nation. The offset is done in a reforestation project planting trees, protecting biodiversity, and creating sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Tree-Nation is an internationally recognized non-profit, dedicated to reforesting the world and a partner of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Repairable Products

We design our watches to be tough, durable and long-lasting. Our design philosophy is to make them repairable  because minimizing waste and lengthening their lifecycle is more sustainable and cost effective. We maintain a high-quality  that repairs our watches. With a Suunto at your side, you can count on a long term partnership.

Refurbished Watches

When a customer sends a product back, whenever we can refurbish it and send it back out into the world for a second life. This reduces electronic waste and ensures precious resources are reused.

Renewable Energy

Suunto factory & HQ use 100% renewable energy which means all products made in Finland are also made with 100% renewable, carbon free energy. This covered over 70% of all our products in 2023. This adds to the endeavor to minimize our emissions, for which the bedrock is manufacturing high-quality, long-lasting products.
