The Alpine XT Bivy is built for solo mountain travel, delivering waterproof, breathable protection and comfort in rugged, unpredictable mountain conditions.
Constructed with Pertex® Shield Air fabric and fully seam-taped for durability, the Alpine XT Bivy is newly updated for 2026 and offers exceptional weather resistance and airflow to minimize condensation through a passive ventilation flap. An extra-large mesh screen allows for stargazing and ventilation, while a high-volume toe box adds sleeping comfort. The easy-access side opening streamlines entry and exit, and the single DAC aluminum pole design with included stakes ensures stability and quick setup when the situation demands it.
Our Verdict
The Outdoor Research Alpine XT Bivy is a serious solo shelter for exposed, unpredictable terrain. At 626g, it sits firmly in the protective end of the bivy spectrum rather than in the minimal, fast-and-light category.
The 2026 update introduces Pertex Shield Air, a three-layer waterproof laminate that improves air flow while maintaining full weather protection. In practice, this means stronger resistance to prolonged rain and wind while allowing moisture vapour to escape. The addition of a passive ventilation flap and a large mesh panel further improves airflow management.
Internal space is generous for a bivy. The single DAC pole creates useful headroom, and the high-volume toe box helps reduce contact between your sleeping bag foot box and the shell. That said, if you are a restless sleeper, some brushing against the fabric is unavoidable. The large side opening makes entry and exit much easier than in traditional top-entry designs.
Condensation control is improved compared with more sealed alpine bivies, though careful venting remains important in humid conditions. The 40D PU-coated floor and fully taped seams inspire confidence on rough ground.
