Compact, light and more stable than its low weight suggests
Wechsel says:
The Aeron 1 is a symmetrical, semi-free-standing hybrid tent for one person. Two aluminium hubs on the poles ensure high wind stability and make it a reliable companion on trekking tours, bikepacking adventures or solo camping trips. First, the inner tent is set up, then the flysheet is stretched over it. The ridge pole provides additional rain protection for the inner tent. At the ends of the ridge pole there is a fabric quiver that serves to hold a trekking pole. This further improves wind stability. The semi-free-standing design not only makes it easier to set up, but also allows for flexible camping on different surfaces. The inner tent is mostly made of mosquito netting. Steeply rising walls ensure that the full lying surface of 215 cm can be used optimally. Two large mesh pockets provide space for small items of equipment. The combination of durable 39 cm carbon pole segments and tear-resistant materials makes the Aeron 1 the perfect choice for hike & bike adventures. Lightweight, compact, and built to withstand demanding conditions, it delivers reliable performance wherever your journey takes you.
Our Verdict
At 799g (without pegs and bags), the Wechsel Aeron 1 takes the crown as the lightest semi-freestanding tent we stock. Its 39cm carbon pole sections also give it a very small 40 × 10cm packed size, making it particularly appealing for bikepacking or anyone carrying a smaller pack.
The 215cm-long inner has steep end walls that make good use of the available length, while the ridge pole creates useful headroom and helps shelter the mesh inner around the entrance. At 75cm wide, it will accommodate a wide sleeping pad, but there won't be much room inside for gear either. Fortunately, the 0.77m² vestibule provides practical storage for a pack and footwear.
It pitches inner-first, and the vestibule must be pegged out, so it is not entirely freestanding. I particularly like the fabric sleeves at each end of the ridge pole, which allow a trekking pole to reinforce the structure in stronger winds.
The 10D sil/sil fly cannot be factory seam-taped, so Wechsel includes seam sealant and recommends treating the seams before use.
The footprint (sold separately) includes a tub-shaped section that covers half of the vestibule, helping to keep backpacks, footwear and other equipment dry and clean in poor weather. It is a nice addition that improves the tent’s usability, although I would have preferred to see it included as standard.
