A lightweight four-season backpacking shelter for three
MSR says
The Access 3 tent lets you spend comfortable days in the winter backcountry without hauling around the weight of a large mountaineering tent. Warm, light and strong, this four-season tent provides the protection that skiers, splitboaders and snowshoers need for camping in less severe conditions, such as those near tree-line. The robust frame withstands overnight snow loading, and is quick to set up in the cold. Whether your party is base camping to access powder lines or completing a multiday traverse, the Access 3 tent is warm enough for cold winter nights, yet light enough to keep you nimble while on the move.
Our Verdict
The Access 3 brings the same year-round backpacking approach to a three-person tent, giving you considerably more winter protection than a standard backpacking shelter without moving into expedition-tent weight.
The hubbed pole structure is reinforced by a transverse pole, while Easton Syclone poles are designed to flex under wind loading. Combined with the predominantly solid inner, this creates a much more protected environment in cold, windy and snowy conditions, with better resistance to draughts and spindrift.
At under 2kg, the weight is remarkably manageable for a three-person four-season tent, particularly when divided between the group. That makes it a practical option for winter backpacking and longer year-round trips where you still have to carry everything.
As with the rest of the Access range, this isn't a heavyweight expedition or summit shelter. The fly does not extend as close to the ground as those designs, and maximum storm resistance has been traded for significantly lower weight and bulk.
Flysheet vents also provide much-needed airflow through the solid-inner design and help keep condensation under control.
