Our Verdict
At 235g (Medium), the Montbell 2026 Thunder Pass Pants offer a sensible balance of waterproof protection, durability and pack weight. The 3-layer DRYTEC fabric and 50-denier nylon ripstop make them feel more suited to regular hill use than very thin emergency overtrousers, while the 20,000mm+ waterproof rating gives proper wet-weather reassurance.
I like the knee-length side zips, as they make the trousers much easier to pull on over footwear. The articulated knees help with movement, and the Samue Leg Closure System is a useful detail for tidying the lower leg around boots.
