Our Verdict
The Lifesystems XL Fire Starter prioritises reliability over convenience. The larger ferro rod is easier to use than many compact fire steels and produces a strong shower of sparks even in poor conditions. That extra size also makes it more approachable for those who don't regularly use a fire steel.
A lighter is still my preferred option for everyday camp tasks, but as a backup or emergency fire-lighting tool, this is a simple and reassuring piece of kit.
