The proven SYNMAT TECHNOLOGY™ inside is made from recycled Texpedloft and is welded to the top and bottom of the air chambers. This prevents cold bridges caused by air circulation, resulting in the best possible insulation. All our backpacking mats feature Cradle Comfort™ for added comfort: the outer longitudinal air chambers are slightly raised for even better support on the mat.
The recycled, bluesign®-recognised ripstop polyester is robust and durable, perfect for frequent use on campsites or tent pitches. The integrated hand pump ensures easy, quick, and moisture-free inflation.
Our Verdict
The Exped Versa 4.5R M Sleeping Mat offers a solid mix of warmth and durability, weighing 691g with an R-value of 4.4. It sits comfortably in the 3-season category.
At 7.5cm thick, it feels supportive and stable in camp. The vertical baffles work well for side sleepers, while the oversized baffles help keep you cradled through the night. The rectangular shape provides a consistent sleeping area, making it a good option if you tend to move around.
The integrated pump system is either a key selling point or a drawback, depending on preference. It removes the need for a separate pump sack and allows moisture-free inflation, but it can take longer to inflate fully than dedicated pump systems and requires more effort to inflate fully.
The 75D fabric gives it a more durable feel than lighter mats, holding up well to regular use on mixed ground.
Overall, this is a dependable option that combines comfort, warmth, and durability for a wide range of trips.

ASTM R-Value:
From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.
You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.
In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
