Light, breathable, and versatile—more midlayer than wind shell, which is exactly what makes it work.
Montbell says:
The outer shell is made with an ultrathin material that is surprisingly strong and provides excellent wind proofing. The polyester lining provides adequate insulation for cooler weather while also functioning as a way to quickly wick away moisture. In addition, the stretch fabric in the back and sleeves and the ventilation under the arms provide comfort even when you're charging up your favourite trail.
Our Verdict
The Montbell Ultralight Shell Hooded Jacket is an unusual piece; it carries the name of a shell but functions more like a breathable, protective midlayer. At 145g (Medium), it’s impressively light. The soft polyester mesh lining and underarm vents provide standout comfort and airflow, surpassing the benefits of traditional wind shells. The 12-denier fabric offers solid wind resistance and sheds light rain, although it’s not designed for heavy weather conditions. The fit is true to size, with enough space for a light layer underneath, and the dual-adjustment hood stays put without restricting vision. There are no hand pockets, which I miss, but the chest pocket doubles as a stuff sack, keeping the design streamlined. It’s not a layer for cold conditions, but rather for cool summer days, spring walks, or fast-paced autumn hikes; it strikes a sweet spot between comfort and performance.
