Our Verdict
The Thermarest Trail Pro MAX is built for comfort and durability, weighing 1271g and featuring an R-value of 4.4. It is not the lightest option and packs down fairly large, but the trade-off is a more robust and reliable mat that handles regular use well.
At 7.6cm thick, it feels very supportive in camp. The foam-and-air construction provides a stable sleeping surface with less movement than airbeds. The plush stretch-knit fabric is noticeably soft, which adds to overall comfort through the night. The increased width provides more room, making it a good fit for side sleepers or anyone who prefers a bit more space in camp.
Self-inflation does most of the work, with a small amount of air needed to reach the desired firmness. The valve system is easy to use and makes both setup and pack-down straightforward, though packing away does take a bit of effort due to the foam core.
