The Western Mountaineering TerraLite offers a light weight spacious bag that can also serve as a quilt, so is a perfect choice for those looking for a warm and comfortable night's sleep, but still want to save the grams.

Western Mountaineering says:

The latest addition to our Extremelite Series is a wide sleeping bag made for side sleeping comfort, the Terralite. It features our 12 denier ripstop nylon shell fabric with a 15 denier nylon taffeta lining material. There are two zippers allowing this bag to mate with our mummy bags and the second zipper opens the bag up completely around the foot. With both zippers open this bag can make a fairly wide “camper van” comforter, but even when zipped up it is extremely comfortable. This is due to its wide girth through the middle of the bag, a design that side sleepers will find ideal. Despite the comfortable shape, this bag weighs less than two pounds.

Our Verdict

The TerraLite is part of Western Mountaineering's lightest range the ExtremeLite which focuses on reducing the weight but still managing to deliver a good rating for a comfortable night's sleep.

The TerraLite fits well into this range but is focused on some clever design features in order to suit those that require a bit more space, so is perfect for side sleepers and also those of us who are a bit restless, of which I fit into this category. The main features of the TerraLite are that is is firstly a very spacious bag when used as a sleeping bag, with more space across the shoulders and the hips so rolling over in the middle of the night was not the affair that it sometimes can be in a tighter mummy bag.

However, it is the different functions of this bag that set it apart and the ability to turn it into a full quilt make it great for different temperature conditions. Having something that can act as both a bag for colder conditions when you nee to trap as much heat in, or as a quilt for use in a warmer camper or hostel is such a useful concept.

With a comfort rating of -4° C the TerraLite has a very competitive warmth to weight ratio and makes it a great choice for use most of the year round, and definitely for those looking for more space and comfort.
