Our Verdict
The move to the 200D Woven Dyneema fabric marks the latest iteration of the Southwest 70. This new, fully woven construction delivers a significant step up in abrasion resistance compared to the older hybrid Dyneema Composite versions, while eliminating the stiff, crinkled texture associated with DCF. The trade-off is a slight increase in weight, at 1,025 g (Medium), but for a 70 rucksack designed to carry up to 27 kg, it remains impressively light.
The pack feels more comfortable under sustained weight. The redesigned shoulder straps and curved back panel distribute pressure evenly, creating a noticeably more natural fit across the shoulders and neck. The side pockets have been deepened and angled for easier access to bottles or poles on the move, and the roll-top system, top Y-strap, and compression layout remain practical for varied packing loads.
For backpacking trips that demand more gear, winter expeditions, and longer self-supported routes, the Southwest 70 strikes a balance between Hyperlite’s trademark minimalism and real expedition capability.
