The Gossamer Gear Rolled Thinlight Foam Pad – 1/8in quietly adds value to an ultralight kit, offering practical protection and useful grip beneath an inflatable mat.

Gossamer Gear says:

The Gossamer Gear Thinlight Foam Insulation Pad is the sleeping pad of your minimalist dreams. With 12 different uses - from adding insulation to your sleep system to its use as an on trail yoga mat, there is every reason for a thinlight pad to be an essential part of your ultralight backpacking kit. The average weight of the new Thinlight pad remains the same as previous versions.

R-Value: We have not determined a R Value or temperature rating for the closed cell foam due to its variable density - but based on thermal conductivity data compiled by an independent scientist, we estimate the R values to be 0.5 for the 1/8" Thinlight.

Please note that some pads will feature scuffs, small air pockets, or creases. This is cosmetic and does not affect performance. NOTE: sizes may vary by up to ½" length / 1.3 cm

Our Verdict

At around 76g for the rolled version, it’s not something I’d sleep on by itself. It acts as a barrier between the mat and the tent floor, reducing the chance of punctures and lending just enough insulation to take the chill off cooler ground. I’ve also found it adds friction, which helps stop an inflatable mat sliding about inside a silnylon tent—a small but welcome improvement.

Beyond sleep, the rolled pad works well for a range of uses. It’s easy to cut to size or trim for a sit pad, and it can slot down the back of a frameless pack to give it some structure. The rolled format makes it less convenient to pack internally than the folded version, but it’s simple enough to secure on the outside of a pack if needed. If you’re looking to protect your mat and gain a bit more versatility without excess weight, it's worth a look.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures. This will be also be dependent on your sleeping bag, how cold you sleep etc. Please contact our customer service team if you need advice on choosing the right mat for your activity.
