Warm, soft and reinforced where a rucksack causes the most wear.
Patagonia says:
Bringing the warm fuzzies to climbers, surfers and campers for decades, our beloved Polartec® double-sided shearling fleece is now made with 100% recycled polyester that’s softer than ever. This daily-wear jacket is the warm hug you need before and after a chilly surf session or mountain ramble. Made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory.
Our Verdict
The Patagonia Retro Pile Patch Jacket uses thick double-sided fleece for comfortable warmth, while ripstop panels across the shoulders and chest protect the areas most exposed to straps and abrasion. The regular fit leaves room for a base layer without feeling restrictive.
At 558g (Medium), it is too heavy and bulky for lightweight backpacking, but it works well for travel, campsites and relaxed walking. Two zipped chest pockets remain accessible above a rucksack hip belt, while the handwarmer pockets provide additional secure storage.
Its reinforced upper panels are the most practical part of the design; I can see this getting a lot of use on and off the hills.
