The tarp-poncho allows you to save even more weight and volume of ultralight hiking gear in your backpack, providing the maximum possible protection from rain and wind both during overnight stays and on trails during long hikes.
This ultralight and versatile poncho-tarp, combining the functionality of two pieces of gear, will be very useful for true thru-hikers.
Based on the PYRAOMM SOLO TARP 1P without changing the dimensions and maintaining compatibility with the inner mesh PYRAOMM SOLO MESH 1P, it's a fully functional two-layer sleeping system for one person.
The adjustable hood and cap allow you to customise it specifically for you, and the size of the poncho-tarp does not restrict movement while walking, even with a backpack.
The elastic belt securely fastens the poncho in strong winds, and the front zipper will add more comfort and provide the option for additional ventilation.
Seams of the poncho-tarp are non-sealed. For seams sealing, we recommend sealant based on silicone. Mostly prefer McNett Seam Grip+SIL (earlier known as McNett Silnet Seam Sealer).
Poncho-tarp is made from 1.1 oz Levitex Silpoly 20D Ripstop 2000 mm.
PITCHING AS A SHELTER
- Stretch corners with pegs in the shape of a regular rectangle
- Put the trekking pole at an angle on top or on 2 trekking poles in A-form. Please note that the sharp ends of trekking poles must be covered
- Tightening guy lines for good stretch of shelter
- Add additional guy lines
USING AS A PONCHO
- Put on the poncho over your head like a regular sweatshirt
- Wrap the back part of the poncho around yourself
- Fix the poncho with the elastic belt
- Adjust the hood for your comfort
Our Verdict
The Liteway Poncho PyraOmm is a clever ultralight option for those who want to streamline their gear without sacrificing utility. Weighing just 369 grams, this poncho combines reliable rain protection with a dual-purpose design that converts easily into a minimalist shelter. That being said, this poncho/tarp can integrate with the Pyraomm Duo Half Mesh, creating a full double-walled shelter.
Constructed from Silpoly 20D Ripstop with a 2000 mm hydrostatic head, it effectively shields against rain and wind. The roomy, adjustable hood and elastic waist belt provide a secure fit while allowing entire movement, even over a backpack. As a shelter, the PyraOmm pitches to dimensions of 276 cm by 120 cm, providing solo hikers with ample space, though it doesn't fully cover the forearms with a large pack on. The cape’s ten loops with line locks simplify the setup, making it easy to tension and adjust the tarp configuration with trekking poles or trees.
For ultralight hikers, the Poncho PyraOmm’s versatility is a highlight. It reduces the need to pack separate rain gear and shelter. While seam sealing is recommended for complete waterproofing, this poncho tarp balances weight savings with a robust design, making it a solid addition to a minimalist kit. The pouch has a small elastic belt to cinch it in as a waterproof shell. It is small and potentially accessible to lose, but any elasticated belt would also work.
