Our Verdict
The Patagonia R1 TechFace Hoody is best seen as a fleece-softshell hybrid rather than a cosy camp layer. At 443g (Medium), it is built for active use in cool, changeable conditions, with light warmth, stretch and more abrasion resistance than a standard fleece.
The smooth-faced recycled polyester-spandex fabric is the main strength. It provides useful protection against light winds, rock contact, and brief showers, while still breathing better than a shell.
The adjustable hood, hem adjustment and high-zipped hand pockets are well thought out for use with a pack or harness. It is not the warmest fleece, but for scrambling, climbing, fast walking and breezy hill days, it works well

Features
- Lightweight 90% recycled polyester/10% spandex double-weave fabric is soft and warm next to the skin, but doesn’t trap heat; the smooth outer face resists abrasion and sheds moisture with a durable water repellent (DWR) finish made without intentionally added PFAS
- Slim, athletic fit with a full-zip, an articulated pattern and a stretchy hood allows for a wide range of movements, especially when reaching overhead or across the body
- Adjustable and stretchy hood with a laminated visor provides coverage and visibility with or without a helmet
- One external, zippered chest pocket and two high handwarmer pockets with mesh backers for ventilation keep goods close at hand and accessible even with a harness or a pack waistbelt
- Low-bulk cuffs stay out of the way when reaching for handholds
- Hem adjusts by pulling a cord in the handwarmer pocket and releases with cord locks at the front hem
- Made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory, which means the people who made this product earned a premium for their labor
