Our Verdict
At 166g (Medium), the Patagonia Capilene Thermal Weight Bottoms provide more warmth than a standard baselayer without adding much bulk beneath walking or waterproof trousers. The Polartec Power Grid fabric has a smooth outer face for easy layering, while the open-grid interior traps warmth but still allows heat and moisture to escape during more active use.
The fit is close without feeling compressive, and the gusseted crotch, low-bulk seams and soft elastic waistband keep them comfortable over longer periods. The added stretch also gives them plenty of freedom of movement.
They work well as cold-weather walking thermals or as warm bottoms around camp and for sleeping. For lower temperatures, they offer a strong balance of warmth, breathability and comfort without feeling overly heavy or restrictive.
