Our Verdict
The Altra Olympus 7 Mid GTX combines the roomy Original FootShape fit with a 33mm zero-drop platform and a lighter, softer EGO MAX midsole. At 379g in a UK 8, it offers substantial cushioning without feeling overly heavy for a waterproof mid-height walking shoe.
The GORE-TEX Invisible Fit upper protects in wet conditions while allowing the shoe to retain more flexibility than a traditional hiking boot. Around the ankle, the refined collar, plush tongue and webbing loops help improve comfort and security.
Underfoot, the broad base offers stability on rough ground, while the Vibram Megagrip outsole with TractionLug provides dependable grip across wet rock, mud and loose surfaces. Its combination of cushioning, toe space, waterproofing and traction makes it particularly well suited to high-mileage hiking and backpacking.
