Our Verdict

The Outdoor Research Newhalem Windstopper Beanie is designed for activity in cold, windy environments, where maintaining warmth without trapping excess heat is key. At 73 g (Medium), it has a close, secure fit that sits comfortably under a hood or helmet. The ear coverage is well judged, but it can obstruct hearing. 

The fabric completely blocks wind while still allowing enough breathability to prevent overheating during moderate exertion. Moisture transfer is steady, and the inside remains dry even when working hard uphill. The recycled polyester shell feels structured and slightly crinkly, which reflects its technical nature rather than casual comfort. It is not a beanie to leave on all day, but one to use when the wind demands it.
