A footprint might feel like extra weight, but with the right tent, it adds protection, flexibility, and peace of mind.
MSR says:
Custom-fit protection for your tent floor, providing increased protection from water and wear-and-tear.
Our Verdict
Most manufacturers recommend using a footprint to extend the life of the groundsheet of your tent, but if you've just bought an ultralight tent, do you want to carry the extra weight associated with it?
We recommend using a footprint if you expect camping on rough ground, especially with lightweight tents with fabric like the Tiger Wall. Some footprints have other uses, such as pitching just the flysheet and footprint together as an ultralight shelter - so in this case, the footprint provides you with increased flexibility in your shelters. The footprint also does a great job of keeping the tent's floor clean when your pitch is wet or muddy.
