The climber’s ultimate soft shell; light, tough and protective it’s the definitive choice for everything from big walls to sea cliffs.
Mountain Equipment says:
With its cavernous helmet compatible hood, offset front zip and minimalist single pocket design the Squall is truly at home in any climbing situation. A stretchy double weave EXOLITE fabric and precise Active fit offers both the toughness and unhindered movement necessary for those who find themselves making hard moves on rock and ice.
Our Verdict
At 316g (Medium), the Squall Hooded Jacket is a light, protective softshell built around climbing. The EXOLITE 125 fabric offers stretch, breathability, and enough weather resistance for wind, light showers, and exposed rock, without feeling like a heavy shell.
I like how focused the design is. The Active fit keeps excess fabric to a minimum, while the articulated sleeves enhance movement when reaching or scrambling. The helmet-compatible hood provides proper coverage, and the offset zip offers additional protection around the chin and mouth in harsher conditions, without a central zip rubbing against your face.
Storage is deliberately minimal, with one zipped chest pocket that stays usable above a harness and doubles as a pack-away pocket with karabiner loops. It is close-fitting and not built for sustained rain, but it works well for climbing, scrambling and mountaineering.
